This show constantly throws curve balls at the audience that always keep it engaging. The final thing that makes Code Geass so special is the ideological conflict between its main characters Suzaku and Lelouch. Lelouch is the radical terrorist who wants to liberate his people by attacking the government. By working with Britannia, he believes he can change the system from the inside with minimal bloodshed.
What are Leluch and C. We can even get new characters into the mix or develop previously undeveloped characters. Like the original anime, the allegiances change all the time and it would be very interesting to see where everyone is at.
Some characters like Kallen and Nannaly have unfinished character arcs that could explored more in a continuation. Code Geass relies on its complex characters and their relationships and a continuation could really explore more avenues that ever before.
A long time ago, Mecha shows had some of the most impressive and jaw-dropping animation in the industry. While Code Geass never had the most polished animation, the original series and the OVA combined natural 2D animation with great cg animation for the mechs. Many fans are wondering if a continuation of the series can maintain the great presentation and directorial style of the original series.
Considering the track record of recent Mecha series not created by trigger, the likelihood of a well animated continuations to Code Geass is slim. If we were to get a new anime in the Code Geass universe there are a variety of new tales that could be told.
We could get something in the vain of a anthology series where they take the themes of war, destiny, and life and use those themes to create new characters and stories.
Imagine getting a new show where a boy from Japan is inspired by Lelouch and he goes on his own journey to change the world.
He could meet popular Code Geass characters and make his mark in the universe. This could structured in a similar way in how Gundam has multiple different stories with different characters in the same universe.
What we don't wanna see with a continuation of Code Geass is the show spinning its wheels and repeating plot points. Season 2 was guilty of this by repeating certain beats so the show could get to the interesting plot developments. Season 3 should be a clever evolution of the characters and story, but if the show repeats what's popular and has nothing new say then the show would be a waste of time. Id say cynical dick is correct since you say generic like if thats critic and not simply a fact of almost every show basically but even if it wasn't it would just be a observation that doesn't speak of actual quality.

Because it's not as edgy as Evangelion and not as boring as Gurren Lagann. It's that simple. My guess is it happened to fall during a period where a lot of people were being exposed to anime on Adult Swim. It's because it was the culmination of everything popular at that time. You like land based Mecha battles that has a girl with Esper powers in a high school setting like Full Metal Panic? You like the drama of Death Note and having a character that has the power to make people do his bidding and have influence over events?
We got you. You liked how Gundam Seed Destiny had different factions with different ideology's fighting each other? You also liked how it told the story through the perspectives of two protagonists that made you question who was morally in the right?
Heard you liked Super Robots Anime, well guess what? Ya like busty Anime girls? Well we got those too. Anyway, my point is it just a mix of shows and ideas that were very popular at that time. If you watched it back then like myself and others you probably would have really enjoyed it cause it had elements of other shows you enjoyed or were currently watching at the time. It seems cheesy now because a lot of ideas and themes it used were not cliche yet and the kind of dialogue it had was the norm for a show back then.

Your aren't alone. Q : Why do people like Code Geass? A : It's mainstream. Long answer: To clear up a common misconception, a given anime is not "mainstream" because many people like it. An anime is liked by many because it is mainstream. An anime being liked by a lot of people is just a side-effect of it being mainstream. So, it doesn't matter if an anime has been watched by a fifteen people or a million, it can still be mainstream.
In Code Geass' case, it has the mainstream appeal of having a bit of every genre in it. It is a conglomeration of so many different tropes that there virtually must be something for everyone.
