Valjean buys a house in Rue Plumet and hires a maid, Toussaint: the old villa faces a huge and wild garden, where Cosette plays on her own and discovers nature, with Valjean's delight. Father and daughter start walking at Luxembourg Gardens, always in the same boulevard, avoiding people and the rest of the world. At Luxembourg Gardens, Cosette notices a handsome but miserable young student, Marius Pontmercy: she likes him and, as time goes by, when they look at each other every day in the park, she falls in love with him without knowing him; Marius instead still finds her ugly and badly dressed and does not even think about her.
Meanwhile, the girl finally begins flourishing and becomes as pretty as her mother, growing into an elegant and charming lady under Valjean's eyes, who is scared of losing his beloved child and dying alone. Even if she does not remember her childhood, Cosette brings the scars of Montfermeil anyway and develops a melancholic and pensive nature under her cheerful attitude.
Now that Cosette is very beautiful and pleasant-looking, Marius changes his mind and grows fond of her, stalking them and sitting on the nearest bench at Luxembourg. He also suspects that he wants to take advantage of the girl's innocence. After Marius discovers their address, Valjean then takes Cosette away from the Luxembourg Gardens and moves to another house, in which he thought Marius was a hired spy by Javert. He idly watches Cosette for a few nights before approaching her.
When Cosette and Marius finally meet again in Cosette's garden, they confess their love for each other and promise to spend the rest of their lives together. The relationship is briefly endangered when Valjeans wants to flee to England and Marius almost dies at the barricade, but after Valjean saves Marius the two meet again,.
In February 16 of , Marius and Cosette are married. The next morning, Valjean tells Marius of his criminal history. This leads Marius to believe Valjean is dangerous, and asks him to leave him and Cosette. Valjean wishes not to be permanently separated from Cosette, so Marius grants him a visit every evening. But slowly, he makes it clear that Valjean is not wanted in the house, so Valjean leaves and never comes back. Valjean then shares the last minutes of his life with Marius and Cosette, while Cosette learns from Valjean about her past and her mother Fantine.
At thirteen-years-old, Cosette was described to be noble-looking and beautiful: a wealth of chestnut hair that was flecked with gold, a perfectly fair complexion with a rosy flush in the cheeks, a marble-like forehead, an exquisite mouth the smile of which was like sunshine, and deep blue eyes with long chestnut lashes.
Her figure was statuesque, slender but voluptuous. About Songs. About Victor Hugo. Cosette sees less of Jean Valjean after she's married, but she doesn't notice much because she's so in love with Marius.
How's that for gratitude? At the end of the book, Cosette finds out that Valjean is dying and runs to his bedside to tell him how much she loves him before he dies. Then he dies. Logging out…. Logging out You've been inactive for a while, logging you out in a few seconds I'm Still Here! The two soon find Chou Chou who follows them home one day.
They try to hid him but are immediately caught after he destroys Eponine's dress and sheets. Despite this, Fantine manages to buy Cosette a warm skirt for the winter which is given to Azelma and cross-stitched bag of potpourri which Eponine throws away but is later recovered by Gavroche.
On Christmas Eve night, Eponine and Azelma empty the water bucket as a prank so that Cosette will have to venture into the woods alone. As she struggles with the heavy bucket, a stranger comes up behind her and snatches the bucket from her, claiming it is too heavy for a child like her.
The stranger, Jean Valjean , takes Cosette back to the village and asks her various questions about her, soon discovering that she is the child he has been looking for. He also gives her her first doll, Catherine. However, Valjean backfires and ask that instead of paying for her medical expenses, if he could just take her instead. Cosette is reluctant to go, worried that her mother will come for her and she won't be there.
After bestowing her mourning clothes, the two set off for Paris. After a mishap during a detour in which Catherine is almost lost, the two arrive in a shabby apartment at the Gorbeau House, just inside the city, and he and Cosette live there happily for a few months. However, Javert discovers their wereabouts and they are forced to flee. They manage to find refuge in the Petit-Pipus convent where they are discovered by Fauchelevent, the man Valjean saved before, who is the gardener.
He divisious a plan to have Valjean re-enter the convert as his brother by putting his body in a empty casket to be buried in the false tomb for one of the deceased sisters. During this time, Cosette waits at a fruit stand where she waits anxiously for her father to return. She begins to believe that he abandoned her like her mother did until he arrives. They secretly re-enter the convert and Cosette becomes the newest student there.
She is instantly flooded with admiration and attention from her peers and becomes instant friends with all of them, especially Charlotte , Beatrice , and Audrey.
