The Illinois Fire Safety Alliance has a program to distribute year, sealed battery fire alarms to fire departments in Illinois. The program provides 24 fire alarms per fire department request. Once those alarms are installed, a department can request more.

The Red Cross and its partners will install a limited number of free smoke alarms for those who cannot afford to purchase smoke alarms or for those who are physically unable to install a smoke alarm.
The Red Cross installs a limited number of specialized bedside alarms for individuals who are deaf or hard-of-hearing. A number of organizations are partnering with the Red Cross to accomplish the goals of our Home Fire Campaign. Depending on where you live and other factors, it is possible that we will forward your request to one of our partner organizations so they can contact you to set up an appointment.

The free smoke alarm program is a partnership between the South Bend Fire Department and the American Red Cross with which you may apply and have a smoke alarm installed in your private residence free of charge.
You can fill out this online form here and a Fire Prevention officer will contact you to schedule the installation. You may stop by the Central Fire station at S. Michigan in South Bend between the hours of am and pm Monday-Friday and pick up an application.
