If you're at the desktop, you can easily shut down by holding down the Alt key and pressing F4. A Shut Down Windows box pops up. Click on the box's dropdown menu to see all of the available options, including Switch user, Sign out, Sleep, Shut down, and Restart.
Again, select Shut down. Another method lets you shut down at the log-in screen. At the Start screen, click on your account photo in the upper right corner and then select the Sign out option. Click your mouse or tap any key to get past the Lock screen. At the log-in screen, click on the Shut down button in the lower right corner.
Notebook users can also exit Windows 8 by pressing the power button or closing the lid. To set this up, move to the desktop. Right-click on the battery icon in the System tray and click on the Power Options command.
In the Power Options window, click on the setting to Choose what the power button does. In the Change Icon dialog box, select an appropriate icon, such as the power icon. Click OK twice. You can also create an shortcut for restart and assign the appropriate icon.
In the below screenshot you can see the shortcuts created for shutdown and restart of Windows 8. Press Windows logo key on your keyboard to see the start screen and look for Apps, you can arrange the Apps by date installed. We see that the Shutdown and Restart options can now be seen in the Apps section. Right click on both Shutdown and Restart option and click Pin to Start.
We now see them in the start screen. Drag the shutdown icon to a prominent place on your Start screen. We recommend putting it in the first column to the left so you will always see it. Right click the icon and select Pin to Taskbar if you want the shortcut to live on your desktop's taskbar as well. Repeat the previous steps to create a Restart button. Laptop Mag. Avram Piltch.
