When was the royal variety show 2011

The show featured a raft of female entertainers, following complaints of a lack of them the previous year — The Bluebell Girls, Sandie Shaw, Lulu and Vikki Carr were among those featured. American singer and former Supreme, Diana Ross, used the occasion to make a moving tribute to black civil rights leader, Martin Luther King, who had been so tragically assassinated earlier in the year. The roster of Royal Variety performers in the early s read, simply, like a list of the greatest entertainers from around the world — top British names such as Ronnie Corbett, Vera Lynn and Elton John shared the bill, and, often, a dressing room, with the likes of the Jackson Five, Carol Channing and the Duke Ellington Orchestra.

In , after 16 years of recorded television broadcasts, the Royal Variety Performance was broadcast live on television for the first time. The show was held at the Theatre Royal in Drury Lane for the first time in its history. For the first time, sponsorship was introduced, to pare down the unavoidable and ever-increasing production costs, as a prudent and acceptable alternative to increasing seat prices. Louis Benjamin also introduced advertising in the brochure and re-negotiated television fees, both in the UK and overseas.

The 50th anniversary of BBC television fell in , so it was appropriate that this was the year the broadcaster produced and presented the show. Two breaks from tradition followed a few years later. The first winner was singer Paul Potts, followed by the incredible 14 year old street dancer George Sampson, then the ten strong dance troupe, Diversity, and last year the thirteen amazing gymnasts Spelbound.

This year sees the debut of the winner, Scottish operatic vocalist Jai McDowell. In February , the E. Your support enables us to provide, a safe, peaceful and happy environment for our Brinsworth House residents, and financial assistance for our beneficiaries all over the UK, at a time of their life when they most need and, indeed, deserve it. Luke Cresswell and Steve McNicholas are the creative directors for this opening performance. Established in , Johnny Kalsi heads the group, travelling around the world to promote the Dhol to the masses.

They have developed an unrivalled level of experience based on 10 years of professional performance providing high impact, visually provoking movement sequences, and together possess an impressive 15 Guinness World Records.

Through simple, clever and charming humour, The Boy has created one of the most accessible and enjoyable shows the world has ever seen.

A virtuoso and a maverick, year-old Garrett is trailblazing a unique career as both a classical and crossover performer. His relaxed brilliance and eclectic style has breathed new life into the classical musical world, drawing in an exceptionally broad fan base from the sophisticated black-tie concert hall audience to the head-banging, hipswaying stadium-going youth.

As someone who has spent more hours playing violin than he has sleeping, Garrett is enjoying international superstardom, sweeping up platinum and gold awards around the world for both his CDs and DVDs. Unfortunately, these days, all we seem to hear about from the media are terrible stories of neglect, both in hospitals and care homes - such a sad reflection on nursing today. There is a warmth and a friendly feeling everyone seems to notice when arriving at Brinsworth.

The house is years old, mellow and welcoming. Show posters adorn the hall and staircases and there are scintillating aromas wafting out from the kitchen. There is also a small intimate theatre bar where residents and their friends and family can gather.

It is a truly bustling place, always something going on: visitors coming to lunch small charge , musical movements, quizzes, a bi-weekly hairdressing service and bingo, of course. Art therapy and handicrafts, film shows, Pet Therapy dogs, along with our fortnightly shows performed on the stage and spontaneous piano performances by some of our residents are also part of life at Brinsworth.

We have close links with our local junior and infant schools just across the road that come and visit the residents at Christmas and Harvest Festival times and during Book Week, when the children choose a book and come and read to the residents. For peace and quiet there are always the gardens in summer and the conservatory in which to read the paper.

The residents have their own parties, one in the summer and one at Christmas, where they can invite their friends and relatives. She oversees the day to day care of the residents together with her dedicated team of registered nurses and health care assistants.

Our staff receive full and continuous training, with most of the courses held at Brinsworth. Homemade soups, locally sourced meat, fish, fruit and vegetables are all delivered fresh each day to give the residents a varied and nutritious menu. The staffing levels are high; most of my staff have been with me for the majority of my 24 years at the Home. We do not use agencies and retired staff stay on the bank to help out when needed so our residents receive the continuity of care they deserve - 58 staff and 36 residents, not a bad ratio.

The maintenance staff ensure that the fabric of the Home is well maintained and life at Brinsworth continues to run smoothly and our residents are kept safe and comfortable. The rapport we have with relatives and next of kin is very important to us and hopefully makes them feel they can trust us with the care of their loved ones.

The residents and staff of Brinsworth have asked me to say a special thank you to you all on their behalf.

They are grateful for your support and hope you have a wonderful evening. The idea was received with great enthusiasm and a considerable sum of money was immediately pledged from across the entertainment industry.

By the following April , the entire amount had been raised and the mansion and 5 acres of land became the freehold property of the Music Hall profession. By the end of November , there were ten occupants in residency, including one married couple. Our resident chef caters for a wide variety of special dietary requirements, depending on the needs of each individual resident.

Over the years, and with the continual help and financial support of the entertainment industry, two new wings have been added to Brinsworth House and on both occasions the care home was honoured by the presence of one of its most ardent supporters, the late HM Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, who performed the opening ceremonies. She was the most wonderful story teller and I delighted in hearing about her years in show business and life as a child in Morecombe.

The death of her beloved Scottie, her husband, manager, confidante, line-tester and very best friend, was a blow from which Thora never really recovered. Her daughter Janette was wonderful and she adored her two grandchildren but no one replaced Scottie. As the years went by, her health began to fail and there were fewer dates in the diary, something that really depressed her.

A member of staff came and asked her if she would like tea for her guest. A tray of tea and biscuits was brought, put before Thora and she poured. This is the level of respect Brinsworth shows to all the residents. Under the wonderful leadership of Matron, Sheila Gould, a devoted staff of nurses, carers, cooks, cleaners, handymen, gardeners, and administrators make sure the quality of care is second to none, something that is recognised by the local authority on its regular but unannounced inspections.

And the care is total care. Live entertainment means a lot to many of the residents who have spent their lives in show business. I so enjoy my regular visits, which have enabled me to share some very special moments with both residents and staff. Each month, a committee meets to allocate grants to those in need. In the second half, the audience, unperplexed by the delay, were treated to the wonderful sounds of classical crossover quartet Il Divo , before the arrival of Royal Variety favourite and music legend Barry Manilow.

Manilow however was not without his technical problems - whilst doing a duet of Mandy with his former, younger-self presented on a screen , syncing issues caused him to request to re-perform the song. The producers quickly agreed and so for the first time in Royal Variety history, an artist was allowed to re-record his performance to provide a better production for TV.

The audience were delighted by the unexpected events throughout the show and Her Royal Highness Princess Anne clearly enjoyed the uniqueness of the whole occasion! The show concluded with a terrific performance by American legend Tony Bennett , after which a superb finale with the whole cast ended a truly amazing night. Albeit an eventful one! But perhaps the biggest performance of the night came from comedian Peter Kay who hosted the event. The Northern funnyman kept the audience entertained as he wandered on stage in an umbrella hat, a poncho and bright yellow wellington boots as he referenced Singing In The Rain.

Ready for the rain: Peter Kay hosted the event and kept the audience laughing. Having some fun: The comedian also led an orchestra that included ten Royal Marine drummers. He also had fun leading an orchestra with the help of ten Royal Marine drummers.

Other famous faces who arrived at the event to enjoy the night of entertainment was Northern Irish comedian Frank Carson who posed for photos with a teenage girl who was set to present Princess Anne with some flowers at the show.
